Hungarians love devouring lángos fried-dough treats anytime and anywhere, but it is primarily still considered to be a summertime food to enjoy while lounging by a lake. However, even though summer has now slipped away, we do not have to say goodbye to this deep-fried delight at all, especially because a new locale opened at Móricz Zsigmond Square that specializes in this tasty treat – funnily enough, in the former location of a health-food store.

Lángos is definitely not a diet-friendly meal, but sometimes this crunchy and filling deep-fried dough packed with various tasty toppings is just what we need. Ordinarily, lángos is only topped with garlic butter, sour cream, and/or shredded cheese, but at Lángos Báró, the possibilities of toppings are endless, and guests can choose whatever they want on their treat. In addition to various shapes (classic, filled, balls, mini, filled balls – 250-390 HUF), we can choose among 14 bases and 19 toppings. Among the bases we find wasabi mayo, cottage cheese, lecsó cream (149-2,490 HUF), while the selection of toppings includes Serrano ham, smoked salmon, and mixed salad (149-500 HUF). Even the garlic sauce is reimagined here, as we find classic, basil, rosemary, and chili-Habanero-jalapeño versions.

For the sake of simplicity we tried the versions recommended by the house, such as a classic cheese-sour cream lángos; the Norvég Báró, which comes with sour cream mixed with chives and lime, smoked salmon, and tomatoes (990 HUF); the Olasz Báró enhanced with sour cream, leek sprouts, Serrano ham, and arugula (990 HUF); as well as a Sweet Báró that comes with Nutella and banana slices (690 HUF).

One thing is for sure; if you prefer light, airy, and almost see-through dough, Lángos Báró might not become your favorite place, as here they work with a hearty dough enhanced with potatoes (the recipe was made together with the master baker of District XVI, Pékmester). However, thanks to this recipe, the seemingly small meal soon fills the belly as a proper meal.

The boys do not like the idea of making this Hungarian dish similar to a pizza, but they are full of plans for the future; they think that a lángos burger and a plum-cinnamon version for Christmastime are not at all impossible, and when Hungary’s traditional pig-slaughter season arrives in a few months, this might also inspire some meaty novelties.
