Sometimes all we yearn for is a place where we truly feel comfortable in the company of our friends, where we can have a few delicious drinks somewhere outside of our living room. It is always an advantage if we can also order snacks with our drinks, and the service is just as friendly and welcoming, as is the case at Otthonka. The owners worked for a year on this concept to create a place that evokes our grandma’s home, but not in a ruin-pub style.
Despite the fact that this adorable eatery is in a cellar, we definitely don’t feel enclosed due to the high ceiling and the comfortable setting. There are no separated boxes, but we can still find more secluded parts; there is a living room, a dining room, and a big kitchen with an iconic pastel-colored credenza, lard jars, and household blessings.
Otthonka is typically that type of a place where every single day a new decorative item can pop up, such as a porcelain knickknack, a new salt container, or anything that fits in the picture. Our big favorite is the embroided calorie table, which – as it turned out – was almost left at Ecseri Market, as its owner was just about to start their diet on the day it was purchased.They do not specifically represent either the gastro, the gourmet, or the bistro line; they are modest about their cuisine, which mostly offers traditional Hungarian tastes. We tried egg ratatouille in a pot (1,090 HUF), Hungarian paprika-potatoes (1,090 HUF) and reformed makówki (a Hungarian poppyseed dessert) that comes with poppy-seed ice cream, and superb túrógombóc (cottage-cheese dumplings, 890 HUF), for which we would come back anytime. Their burgers are a must, and we can also order them in a vegetarian version (1,390 HUF); the menu also features simple potato-meat combinations, tapas, and pizza – anything we desire with a delicious beer or lemonade, without much fuss, served simply but tastefully.
Otthonka’s prices are truly affordable, as our grandma really wouldn’t appreciate it if we spent too much money on food and drinks. Considering alcoholic drinks, they do not offer artisanal products, but rather popular and well-established brands. It is important to mention that Otthonka is a sports-centered place, so various matches are broadcast liv on several TVs here – and this is another reason that makes us want to loaf around on the couch for hours here.The slightly retro yet modern pub will very likely become a big favorite during the colder seasons, as it is a truly cozy and homey hangout, where we can even arrange bigger events and gatherings.
