Recently, Sonkapult underwent a slight rebirth to became 28 square meters of sophisticated gastronomy and homey hospitality. Their main attraction is still breakfast, but in addition to the mouthwatering Mediterranean hams and succulent cheeses, now they also make lunch menus, and await everyone with delicious wines and beers in the evenings. The revamped Sonkapult became really cozy; we can gaze out of the window while sitting on comfy pillows, or let our eyes wander amid all of the decorative details of this tiny locale, from the pastel-green fridge to the varnished wooden beams.

We love downtown Pest’s Rumbach Sebestyén Street for its atmosphere; here we find vintage boutiques, hipster stores, a theater, and coffees to go; furthermore, the recently revamped Sonkapult has been operating here for years. They primarily consider themselves to be a breakfast place, but we can also loaf around here during lunchtime and in the evenings. The new concept is the creation of Annamária Borsos and Tamás Szécsi.

The interior is very hospitable, homey, and cozy, and they even installed a terrace for warmer days, so we can drink our morning coffee under the open sky. They decided not to abandon espresso culture, but spice it up a bit with specialty coffees. They carefully pick local producers, suppliers, and wineries whose products they would like to introduce to their guests. Just to mention a few examples: the cheeses come from a manufacturer in Vászoly, the hot chocolate is from Tibor Szántó, the syrups are from the Káli Basin, the pastries are made by Misi the baker, Angéla Góg takes care of desserts, and the tasty wines come from the cellars of 2HA, Géza Lenkey, and Frigyes Bott. The beers found in the flashy fridge are the brews of Kapucnis Magyarhertelendi Sörfőzde, and Monyó Brewing. They all proved already that they produce truly high-quality goods.

The menu is divided into two parts; gyorsba’ (rough translation: quickie) and nyugiba’ (rough translation: chilling). Browsing the breakfast selection, we notice that besides sandwiches and pastries, a more healthy line of breakfast options also has an important role now; we can start the day with plant milks and lactose-free yogurt from Vászoly. Obviously, we were more interested in the teaser plates and the sandwiches, and we were glad to see that at Sonkapult, they really know what they are doing.

A carefully created cheese plate is 1,800 forints, the ham version is 2,250 forints, and a mixed plate costs 2,500 forints. These plates are enough for two people, and are the perfect pairs for a good wine. The pumpkin-seed cream mixed with sour cream, which is offered with the cheese and ham plates, immediately became our favorite. Ciabattinis are available from 750 forints, and focaccias from 1,250 forints, and these are both really filling goods. On weekdays from 11am, they offer lunch menus, including a drink (lemonade, syrup sodas, freshly squeezed juice), and a sandwich, for 1,300 forints. If we fancy something sweet, we can choose from the ever-changing dessert selection of Angéla Góg.

In addition to Sonkapult’s cozy atmosphere and wide assortment, here we are welcomed with the really friendly and old-fashioned “don’t go just yet” attitude. It is lovely to spend some time here, both because of the comfy pillows and because of the professional and friendly staff.

The place ceased in 2017.
