Marketplace culture is undergoing a massive renaissance in Budapest – recent months have brought about the establishment of a gourmet selection of street-food stands in the Downtown Market, as well as the complete renovation of the Klauzál Square Market. However, the freshest addition to the city’s newly thriving market scene is the Budafoki Szomszédok Piaca (“Budafok Neighbors’ Market”), which provides more than locally grown produce – this modern bazaar also serves as a community center for this riverfront neighborhood of southern Buda.

Fortunately, more and more markets are being renovated and modernized in Budapest in order to increase the quality of their services. The latest such unit is the Neighbors’ Market in Budafok, which might be a bit far from the city center, but it is still worth visiting every once in a while.

The market was built with contemporary style according to the plans of András Kertész, in a very likeable and transparent manner: the business premises surround an atrium, which is also where the primary producers sell their products. This welcoming space is made distinct by the steel-framed roof and the pavilions.

In addition to providing all of the fresh fruits, vegetables, and other foodstuffs necessary for making nutritious meals, the market also hosts concerts and programs for children. Below we present a photo gallery of some of the colorful attractions at the Neighbors’ Market, but if you’d like to check it out yourself, just hop aboard bus 33 departing from Móricz Zsigmond Square until disembarking at the Városház tér stop in central Budafok, then walk back one block to Mihalik Sándor utca, turn right, and walk two blocks – see the map below for more details.
