Who said you can only get good coffee in Budapest’s downtown neighborhoods? We heard about a welcoming coffeehouse in the northern Buda district of Békásmegyer, and we soon discovered that the rumors were true – there’s a nice little café here that started selling its own brand of coffee and tea, which is used to create a variety of delicious concoctions that can be enjoyed amid a sleekly stylish ambience.
Between the panel buildings and houses of Békásmegyer, a sign indicated which way we must go if we crave coffee specialties in this northern Buda neighborhood. This is how we arrived at Araamu Cafe, the name of which means “comfort” or “indulgence” in Maldivian, which provides a preview of what we’re about to enjoy. The first thing we notice as we step inside is the kind attitude of the staff; the owners opened the café with sincere enthusiasm and passion for serving great coffee, based on their own research and ideas. This can be felt in the atmosphere, making the place friendly and receptive. The bamboo decorations and the aquarium further increase the exotic vibe, not to mention the coffee beans from all around the world.Exciting coffee and tea blends from the best growing areas, including Brazil, Costa Rica, and Tanzania, are packed in bags with a palm-tree logo – these are the café’s own products. We can buy the 18 kinds of coffee and 13 kinds of leaf teas on the spot, but they are also available online, with delivery offered throughout the country. You can have a look at the webshop here.
The main type of coffee is Brazilian; this is what the cappuccinos and strong espressos are made from, and some other variants as well, including Caffé Araamu (690 HUF) with eggnog syrup, whipped cream, and meringue drops, or the Caffé Vanilla (690 HUF) with vanilla and caramel sauce. There are many other exciting, sometimes alcoholic variations – we would gladly return for a cup of chocolate-cream coffee, for example. We can also choose the “coffee of the month”, which is Guatemala Antigua in March.
In addition to coffee and tea, they also have hot chocolate, lemonade, and local craft beers like Tiger, Fóti, Kézműves, and even banana beer, along with other alcoholic drinks; hungry guests can choose among fresh panini sandwiches, crispy nachos, or hot a stuffed tortilla (1,090 HUF). Naturally, they have some desserts, as well, such as plum pie, donuts (350 HUF), chocolate soufflé (690 HUF), and paleo brownies. It’s important to note that Araamu welcomes dogs and children as well, while still being a great venue for business meetings or small events. We are glad to discover a place with a friendly and pleasant atmosphere, proving that indeed, good coffee is available outside of the city center.
