Among all of the traditions surrounding Hungary’s August 20th holiday, the sweetest of them is the debut of a new national cake. Starting in 2007, the custom is relatively recent, but fast becoming a favorite part of the annual celebrations to commemorate the foundation of the Magyar state. This year’s winner is the Caramel Cake with Pannonhalmi Apricot Pálinka, a delectable dessert imbued with Hungary’s most popular potent potable. We are super excited to feel the creamy texture of the cake pampering our taste buds complemented with the sizzling sensation of the Hungarian spirit.

An increasing number of confectioneries join the nationwide competition every year to create an innovatively scrumptious cake recipe to honor the first king of Hungary, St. Stephen, and celebrate his foundation of the Hungarian state. On this occasion the National Trade Corporation of Hungarian Confectioners invites pastry makers from all over the country to invent or reinvent treats that reflect Hungarian traditions and flavors, without using artificial ingredients.

Since the Caramel Cake with Pannonhalmi Apricot Pálinka was announced two weeks ago as the winner of the 2015 contest, all of us with a sweet tooth are craving the heavenly looking delicacy, offered in many confectioneries across the country as of August 20th. Forming a harmonious blend of apricot, almond, chocolate, and caramel, and finished with a touch of pálinka, the lush dessert is the invention of the Salgótarján-based Kézműves Confectionery from the northeast part of Hungary.

Keeping diabetic and health-conscious people in mind, in 2012 the One Drop of Attention Foundation (‘Egy Csepp Figyelem Alapítvány’) initiated the annual contest of Hungary’s sugar-free cake, where white flour, added sugar, artificial additives, and preservatives all must be left out from the list of ingredients. This year the Apricot Bubble Cake by the Budapest-based Horváth Confectionery took the prize within this category.

Anyone joining the August 20th celebrations can sample the winner confection during the Street of Hungarian Flavors at the Várkert Bazaar near the Buda side of the Chain Bridge, or enjoy the delicacy from today on at any of these confectioneries:
