The popular Barber Shop Budapest location on Király Street is a men’s-only destination; “no photos, no ladies” – so proclaims the sign out front. However, a new nearby hangout warmly welcomes girlfriends while they wait for their beaus to be groomed: Barber’s Wife, a charming casual café just steps away from Deák Ferenc Square.

The unconcealed intention of Barber’s Wife is to benefit ladies whose boyfriends or husbands are getting a trim on their mane or beard in the neighboring Barber Shop location, since there’s no girls allowed in the Gellei family’s dens of masculinity. (In fairness, we usually don’t see bored husbands browsing through women’s magazines at beauty parlors, either.) Nonetheless, Barber’s Wife welcomes anyone who would like a nice breakfast, a soda made with syrup, a sandwich, a slice of cake, or a glass of beer in the evening.

The interior is nice and bright, and the air conditioning is great, so the back section is perfect for relaxing on a hot summer day (not to mention that the Wi-Fi is super fast, as well). Upon entering the store, we are immediately faced with the daily offer, which usually consists of sandwiches (490-790 HUF), cakes (490-790 HUF), cupcakes (490 HUF), and salads (790 HUF). Even though they have some usual snacks available, the repertoire changes frequently. The foods are prepared in the kitchen located below the shop, so we don’t see the staff slicing vegetables next to the coffee machine. Half of the counter’s contents are always created with special diets in mind, so those with food allergies do not have to starve here, either. Furthermore, the “-free” section is original and carefully executed: Barber’s Wife greatly transcends the duo of paleo muffins and oat cookies. They also have discounted “menus”, such as the sandwich with cappuccino (790 HUF), cake with cappuccino (690 HUF), or the evening warm-up pack, which includes grissini (breadsticks), dips, and a cocktail for 1,490 forints. For Király Street, these prices are more than reasonable. Our absolute favorite was the Thai-style ice cream, which is naturally a summertime exclusive. We can customize the ingredients for 790 forints, with the end result being a special ice-cream bowl of about three scoops, with extras like brownies, Bounty bars, Oreo cookies, fruit, cornflakes, peanuts, etc. In fact, we were happy to discover that Barber’s Wife also sells a variety of fritz-kola, which is usually quite difficult to get our hands on in Budapest.
