For 15 years, a computer engineer yearned to leave high-tech employment behind and instead open a café – and now Kávé Műhely is a reality near Batthyány Square. Luckily, the owner recognized that his talent in cyberspace would not exactly equate with the hard-earned ability to whip up a delicious cappucino, so he hired a pair of professional baristas to help with the entire production, and they put together a menu that offers something for everybody – including breakfast served all day long.

Kávé Műhely opened just a few weeks ago, but it is already shaping up to be the new coffee hotspot on the Buda side of Hungary’s capital. Focusing on specialty coffees, the place is rather small, but once you step in, you'll find it easy to spend some hours or even half the day here – especially on warm days when the sidewalk seating area beckons.

With its name meaning “coffee workshop” in Hungarian, Kávé Műhely is located just a quick walk from Batthyány Square, and was launched by an enthusiastic computer engineer who dreamed of opening a café for 15 years. He envisioned a place where he could feel at home, but where he could also test his limits at the same time.

Although he admits that he isn’t a skilled barista, he still likes to run the place as professionally as possible, serving good coffee for good people.

This conscientious spirit (plus two professional baristas) can be enough to clear the path to success, or at least that’s what we’ve seen working at new places around the city. Also, that’s what makes Kávé Műhely so loveable: there are no big plans, no trying-too-hard vibes, nothing is overcomplicated. Only two barista girls, good vibrations, and a menu which contains vegan, gluten-free, paleo, and “normal” dishes.

Apart from the specialty coffees imported from Slovakia, guests can order sandwiches (salami, sheep cottage cheese, ham, eggplant cream – 640 HUF), salads (tuna, buffalo mozzarella, camembert – 1,290 HUF), croissants (250-420 HUF), cookies (450 HUF-540 HUF), and breakfasts that can be ordered all day (ham and eggs – 790 HUF, omelette – 790 HUF, fried eggs – 720 HUF).

Our favorite was the chocolate cream with avocado and banana; in fact, we loved it so much that we had to order a second round! What is especially great about these dishes is that they can be prepared in a number of ways according to anyone’s liking, and they go well with a cup of coffee.

When it comes to future plans, the owner said that there aren’t any: they just want the place to become established and popular so they can relax and enjoy all the good things that come with success. We wish them luck, and next time we are near Fő Street, we’ll surely drop by for a tasty hit of caffeine.
