“It feels as if the restaurant had always been here” – a satisfied guest from the neighbourhood told us. For a place that opened just a few months ago, there are few nicer compliments. News of Remetekert Restaurant opening in District II has spread rather quickly among those who long for a cozy atmosphere and familiar Hungarian flavours.

Many of us have dreamed about winning the lottery and quietly opening a nice restaurant or café, but Dániel Bozzay has made this dream come true... except for the lottery part. “Eight years ago, on a Sunday morning, my mother did not really feel like cooking, so we decided to go and have lunch somewhere else, but apart from a few older restaurants, we hardly found a place to go. We have been living in the suburbs for decades, and when we saw this house, we immediately started thinking: what if…” remembers the owner.

The concept was clear; they wanted to open a place that provides something extras when it comes to quality and design, but still remains friendly and cozy, so guests feel at home. They kept the mansion features of the building that has stood there since around 1930, and formed the interior to be simple and friendly. Remetekert does not want to appear to be more than it is: a simple restaurant with a nice garden. They also have a separate children’s corner for the little ones, which will be expanded in the garden when the weather gets better.

Remetekert Restaurant fills a gap in numerous ways. It gives locals more choices for places to eat at, while also having a strong Hungarian flavour. The drinks menu is full of Hungarian wines, and the food menu is built around Hungarian dishes. The place is a family collaboration; even though the chefs are not part of the family, they still roam the markets with the owner and they discuss what dishes they should offer together, as well.

Speaking of the food, let us take a look at the menu. Remetekert is not shy about following foodie trends, and their specialty dishes are all made from Angusbeef. The meat comes from the owner’s father farm in Etyek. In summer there will be a barbecue terrace, where ribs and steaks will be roasted in the shade of two huge pine trees.

The selection itself is rather narrow, but the 10-12 dishes we can choose from are all high quality. During our visit, we tried the tenderloin medallions with ricotta and vegetable barley risotto, served with sun-dried tomatoes; then we ate some lemon pepper chicken breast with zucchini chutney and rice pilaf – both were excellent.

We also tried a heavier dish: the steak, with cabbage (!) potato roundel, wild mushrooms and green pepper sauce with cognac. We learnt that the beef was roasted on an iron place – just how it should be – and after we ate it, we felt that it could not be a more perfect steak. As for the dessert, we tasted some Belgian chocolate lava with walnut ice cream, which proved to be a professionally prepared soufflé within seconds.

The restaurant’s further plans include offering a home delivery service and serving breakfast. On weekdays, they offer a daily menu for 1190 forints, while on Saturday and Sunday, they await guests with special weekend offers.

Remetekert is a restaurant where favourable prices are paired with quality food, which we can eat in a nice atmosphere. It also seems like an ideal location for family events and meetings with friends, not to mention a possible summer wedding, for which the terrace we mentioned and the shade of trees would ensure a unique experience.
