A short walk from the Allee shopping centre, in Kanizsai Street, a whole lot of chocolate, and fruity and creamy sweets have been made over the past year. Édes Sári’s (“Sweet Sarah”) most loyal customers are friendly young people whose fingers smear the display case and who leave dolls and plush toys behind in the shop as mementos. All the while, their mothers and grandmothers can enjoy a slice of fine white chocolate pie.

Édes Sári is not a fictional little girl, no matter how convincing the logo is. She is the creator of the confectionery itself, the cake maker, the shop’s heart. Although Sári initially worked in tourism, she soon changed careers and became a confectioner instead. When Sári was expecting her first child 6 years ago, she started experimenting, baking delicious cakes, pastries, cookies and pies. The first to sell her homemade sweets was Móka Café, but soon more and more orders came. Sári grew out of her home kitchen and opened her own confectionery - much to the delight of Újbuda residents.

The design of the shop is not too fancy, but sugarcoated and bite-sized, with every inch utilised. The workshop is out the back, the choc-a-block counter at the front, and there are some chairs and a big children’s corner, as well. There is a kindergarten nearby, from where children come flooding in with their parents mornings and afternoons. Instead of contemporary artworks, the place is decorated with children's drawings, portraying giant-eared bunnies and smiling suns. We also learned that while the little boys and girls can be very grateful, some can be quite critical. They will not hesitate to say if their favourite treat’s proportions change, or if the cream or pastry is different. Even during our visit there were plenty of children and their grandmothers streaming in for giant chocolate cookies (200 HUF) and cocoa rolls (150 HUF).

The prices are reasonable; the most “brutally” priced product, the Philadelphia cheese cake is 450 forints. Édes Sári always has brownies (350 HUF) and pies made with seasonal fruits (350 HUF), but we also fell in love with the two chocolate pies (350 HUF). We tasted the above-mentioned cheesecake, raspberry dark chocolate pie and the white chocolate pie, as well. The latter two had a great texture and creamy flavour. We can also find Sári’s sweets at Kelet Café, Tranzit Art Café, Kiadó Kocsma, Café Smúz, Móka Café, Családi Csemege in Újbuda, and at All American Food, but the list is constantly expanding. Of course for the original experience, definitely visit the Újbuda shop.
