Several blockbusters and indie films are showing this month in English, including Emilia Clarke’s new Christmas comedy and an Ella Fitzgerald documentary on the renowned singer's life and fame. Also on is the Verzió Film Festival, which features many documentaries and international human rights films. We've put together a list of five recommendations from the festival here.

Emilia Clarke is less fire-breathing dragon and more loveable klutz in this light-hearted Christmas story. Kate, played by Emilia, stumbles through a series of bad luck and bad decisions as she struggles to find her place in the busy world of London. This romantic comedy is directed by Paul Feig, of Bridesmaids and the all-female Ghostbusters fame.

Doctor Sleep

Doctor Sleep picks up where The Shining left off, in this horror blockbuster starring Ewan McGregor. Danny, played by McGregor, is the now grown son of Jack and Wendy Torrance in The Shining, who must face his childhood trauma as ghosts are reawakened from his past. The film is rated R for graphic content, language, nudity and drug use, so best to leave the young tykes at home with a babysitter for this one!

Ella Fitzgerald: Just One of Those Things

Ella Fitzgerald won a talent competition in 1934 as a 15-year-old street kid, and within months she was a star. Her extraordinary journey over six decades is recalled in this feature-length documentary, bringing never-before-seen images and interviews to the big screen for the first time. Playing now at the Uránia National Film Theatre, the documentary is showing in English with Hungarian subtitles.

The newest Scorsese film, The Irishman stars Robert de Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci in a journey through organised crime. Hitmen, thugs, politics and crooked dealings are all a part of this post-war gangster drama spanning several decades in American history, including the unsolved mystery of infamous union leader Jimmy Hoffa. This special pre-premiere screening is in English with Hungarian subtitles, one week before the official national release.

The Pearl of Africa

"A film about love, hate and being transgender in one of the world’s most transphobic places."
Uganda, a small land-locked country in East Africa, once named the Pearl of Africa by Winston Churchill. Enter the life of Cleopatra Kambugu, a 27-year-old Ugandan transgender woman born biologically male. Against all odds, she transitions into the woman she was born to be in this feature-length documentary on her life-changing journey.
Entrance is free, but a recommended donation is between 500-1,000 forints. 50% of the amount collected will be donated to Háttér Társaság, Hungary’s oldest operating LGBTQI awareness organisation.

Spirit in the Forest, a live concert film and documentary by the UK electronic band Depeche Mode is coming to Budapest this November. The film follows six extraordinary fans, whose lives are intertwined with the band, and the group’s Global Spirit Tour at the Waldbühne in Berlin.
