Need a little break from the urban buzz without travelling too far? Luckily, Budapest is surrounded by countless gems that make perfect day trips — from vineyard villages and riverside towns to fairytale lakes and hidden castles, these five day trips from Budapest promise just the right mix of charm, nature, and good food — all within a few hours’ reach. Here are five of our favourites.

Páty

Just a 30–40-minute drive from the city, Páty is a small wine village that perfectly captures the relaxed rhythm of countryside life. It’s the kind of place where the day slowly unfolds — and by late afternoon, locals and visitors begin to gather for wine tastings, pizza, and easy chats that stretch into the evening. You can wander through forest paths, stop for a glass at one of the cellars, and soak in the peaceful scenery.

Don’t miss C’est la vie, a cozy, vintage-style café where you can sip coffee, enjoy homemade cakes, and browse handmade jewellery, candles, and other artisanal finds. Páty is all about good wine, slow moments, and that unmistakable feeling of being far — yet not too far — from the city.

Etyek

Etyek is a wine lover’s paradise and one of the easiest getaways from the city, just a short drive southwest of Budapest. Often called the “vineyard of Budapest,” the village is home to countless small wineries, rustic cellars, and rolling hills that invite you to slow down and savour the day. Local winemakers here are known for their crisp whites and sparkling wines, and many offer tastings paired with cheese platters or home-cooked dishes. It’s also a favourite spot for weekend festivals and open-cellar events.

Szentendre

Hop on the H5 suburban train from Batthyány tér, and in just 40 minutes you’ll find yourself in Szentendre, one of Hungary’s most picturesque towns. Its cobbled streets, pastel-coloured houses, and art galleries make it feel like a Mediterranean village tucked along the Danube. The town is packed with tiny boutiques, museums, and cafés, perfect for aimless wandering.

Don’t miss Bazsilikom Pékség, a charming bakery with a lush garden where you can enjoy fresh-baked pastries and locally roasted coffee under the trees. Szentendre is the ideal choice when you crave small-town calm without straying too far from Budapest.

Lillafüred

Nestled near Miskolc, Lillafüred is one of Hungary’s most scenic destinations — especially during the golden weeks of autumn, when the hills burst into shades of orange and gold. The centrepiece of the area is Lake Hámori, where you can rent a rowboat and glide across the water surrounded by forested slopes. Lillafüred offers that fairytale blend of nature, tranquillity, and fresh mountain air that makes you forget how close the city actually is.

Székesfehérvár

Once the coronation city of Hungarian kings, Székesfehérvár is a place of rich history and elegant architecture — yet still feels relaxed enough for a leisurely day trip. Stroll its baroque squares, discover cosy cafés, and make sure to visit Bory-vár, the whimsical castle built single-handedly by sculptor and architect Jenő Bory as a lifelong project of art and love. With its winding staircases, towers, and sculptures, it’s one of the most unusual and romantic landmarks in Hungary. Only an hour from Budapest, Székesfehérvár perfectly blends cultural discovery with the laid-back rhythm of a small city.
