With 23 October falling on a Friday, Budapest gets a three-day weekend this time around - and there’s plenty happening across the city to fill it. Make the most of free museum entry on the national holiday, try Giulia’s new autumn menu or head to Kopaszi Dam for a beer festival. Saturday brings pumpkins, jazz and DJ Krush, while Sunday is made for design finds, a spa session or an evening among thousands of lights at Füvészkert.

TASTE GIULIA’S NEW AUTUMN MENU

Giulia is welcoming autumn with a new seasonal menu, launching with a four-day New Menu Weekend from 22 - 25 October. Long-time favourites including the carbonara and tiramisu are staying put, while a handful of new dishes are joining the table. Among the newcomers are burrata with pumpkin, a new take on Giulia's vodka and prawn mafaldine, and salt-crusted sea bass flambéed tableside. The idea is to order a few dishes for the table, share them around and get a first taste of Giulia's new autumn line-up.

MAKE THE MOST OF FREE MUSEUM ENTRY

Here's one good reason to spend 23 October at a museum: state-run museums and galleries are free to visit on Hungary's national holidays. Take the opportunity to catch a temporary exhibition you've had on your list, revisit an old favourite or explore a permanent collection you've never quite found the time for.

Places such as the Hungarian National Gallery and the Museum of Ethnography have enough on display to easily fill several hours - so with admission taken care of, you could even turn the public holiday into a full museum-hopping day.

SPEND THE PUBLIC HOLIDAY WITH THE KIDS

With an extra day away from work and school, Friday is a good opportunity to plan a proper family day out in Budapest. Let little ones take over their own miniature city at MiniPolisz, ride the Children’s Railway into the Buda Hills and continue with a walk around Normafa, or head indoors for a few hours among sharks, alligators and tropical wildlife at Tropicarium.
