If classic escape rooms filled with padlocks and number combinations no longer do it for you, it might be time to take things up a notch. Budapest now has several immersive adventures where cinematic sets, gripping storylines, modern technology and creative game elements transport you into a completely different world.

We've rounded up three unique places where problem-solving and teamwork go hand in hand, but the experience itself is always the main attraction.

AROOM: next-generation adventures in the heart of Budapest

AROOM offers one of the widest selections of escape rooms in central Budapest, with 18 games to choose from and two new-generation experiences coming soon. In Magic Shop, you become part of a series of mysterious events, where a single decision can trigger an unexpected turn and change what happens next. Willow Hollow, meanwhile, takes you inside a witch's house – one that seems to be watching your every move, and where getting out might not be quite as straightforward as getting in. The current crowd favourite is Uncharted Expedition, which sends your team into the jungle on the trail of a lost expedition, combining original challenges, realistic visuals and carefully designed gameplay. Families with younger players can try Dream House, Uncharted Expedition or Dragon's Dungeon, where children can get actively involved in the adventure too. More experienced escape-room fans, meanwhile, can put their skills to the test in Neon Hawk, a fast-paced high-tech mission that keeps the pressure on right until the final minute. AROOM has earned recognition from both visitors and the industry over the years, including the Best Escape Room in Hungary award and an international Best of Morty award, alongside consistently strong reviews. If you're after more than a series of puzzles and want a shared experience you'll still be talking about weeks later, AROOM is well worth a try.

MystIQueRoom: 2 revamped escape rooms for an even bigger adventure

MystIQueRoom is one of Budapest's largest escape-room complexes, with 21 completely different themed rooms to choose from when you're in the mood for something a little more adventurous. Whether your team prefers clever puzzles, story-driven missions or genuinely creepy horror experiences, there's plenty here to choose from. The rooms are also regularly updated, giving returning players something new to discover. This summer, two crowd favourites received a makeover. The Egyptian-themed Curse of the Pharaoh is now darker, more mysterious and atmospheric than before, while Bloody Lab, also known as the legendary Cube room, has been taken to another level with four brand-new game elements and 70% of its set replaced. What really makes the experience stand out is the incredibly detailed, cinematic set design. Once you step inside, the outside world quickly disappears, letting you fully immerse yourself in the story. It feels less like simply solving a series of puzzles and more like briefly stepping into another world. And if you're looking for an experience-based gift for a friend or colleague, MystIQueRoom also offers gift cards.

Time Heist: escape-room adventures indoors and outdoors

Located on Liliom utca, Time Heist started as a family business and has continued to develop and update its games ever since, earning excellent reviews from visitors along the way. There are currently seven traditional escape rooms to choose from, while four outdoor adventures were added to the line-up this summer. An exciting hostage-rescue mission takes players from Kossuth tér all the way to Buda Castle and can be played directly through the Time Heist website. The other three outdoor games come with a starter kit including an iPad and app, and take place in one of three locations: Margaret Island, City Park or Deák Ferenc tér. Depending on the adventure you choose, you might find yourself caught up in a spy mission, trying to save the world from a virus, protecting Budapest from complete darkness or teaming up with elves to stop a magical door from opening and unleashing evil mushroom creatures into the world. All three outdoor adventures make use of modern technology, including augmented reality, chatbots and other interactive game elements, turning familiar Budapest locations into part of the experience. You can find the full selection of Time Heist escape rooms on their website.
