From exploring the best ice cream shops and enjoying concerts at the Sziget Festival to scanning the sky for shooting stars and admiring spectacular fireworks, here are the top things to do in August.

1. Scoop up some fun!

We have just finished the tough job of finding the best ice creams in the city and rounded up our favourites in this list. From Italian gelato and ice pops to the world's best ice cream, see where to go in Budapest to cool down with a scoop or two.

2. Gear up for the region's biggest music festival!

Sziget Festival is an event you must attend at least once in your life, and here is why. The Island of Freedom opens its gates on August 7th, bringing six days of concerts, theatre, circus, workshops, an international community, communal singing, dancing, eating, and camping to the Óbudai Island. You can still snag tickets, and if you have one, check out our Festival Guide.

3. Watch the Olympics with the Hungarians!

The Paris Olympics keeps the world buzzing until August 11th, and we have collected the best spots in Budapest to catch the action. Keep in mind, though, that Hungarian athletes are the stars of the show here. But whether you're rooting for the home team or cheering on other competitors, you're in for a fun experience!

4. Watch shooting stars while paddling with SUP Budapest

August is the month of shooting stars, and if you're up for a nature-filled adventure, read on! On August 10th, you can embark on a journey aboard a SUP, paddling all the way to Budapest's northern end, Egyfás Island, just in time for sunset. There, you can chill and scan the sky with other adventurous souls while enjoying guitar music and roasted bites around the bonfire. You can even spend the night on the island and head back to Római-part at sunrise.

5. Hunt treasures at a downtown flea market!

If you like browsing through vintage and second-hand finds, this flea market is for you! On August 10th, head to the gate of Budapest's Jewish district, Madách tér, and let the hunt begin. The market will be open from midday to 5 pm, giving you plenty of time to both shop and then grab coffee or toast with spritzers at one of the surrounding bars.

6. Chill by the Danube while sipping on cocktails

If you're craving the waterfront in the city on summer days, you're in luck! Budapest offers some truly unique spots where you can savour delicious cocktails and neck craft beer while enjoying stunning views. We've rounded up six places, from trendy bars to quiet corners perfect for lazy afternoons or sultry nights, find them here.

7. Let the views of Budapest make your jaw drop!

Budapest boasts some chic rooftop bars and unique lookout points– all worth the climb (and a slight acrophobia). If you're all about the views, aim for Gellért Hill, set off on a walk around Buda Castle, soar above the city in a balloon, or ascend to the top of the MOL Tower. For a drink to complement the sights, you're in good hands too. Rooftop bars atop Hilton Budapest, Budapest Marriott Hotel, or Matild Palace await with breathtaking panorama and delicious cocktails.

8. See the fireworks on St Stephen's Day!

If you find yourself in Budapest on August 20th, you'll be lucky enough to witness a spectacular fireworks display. Celebrating the foundation of the Hungarian state over 1000 years ago, a 30-minute show will light up the sky along the Danube (between the Margaret Bridge and Petőfi Bridge). Starting at 9 pm, you can enjoy it for free from the bridges, the riverbanks, or even Buda Castle, but if you're after a more secluded viewpoint, head to Gül Baba's Tomb, the Philosopher's Garden and Mansfel Péter Park on Gellért Hill!

9. Explore cutting-edge fashion by regional designers!

Fashionistas, you simply can't miss this year's Budapest Central European Fashion Week, running from August 26th to September 1st. You can not only experience cutting-edge creations from emerging local designers but also international talents. While we'll have to wait a bit for the schedule, we already know that this season (SS25) puts new generational designers, regional collaborations, and a focus on consciousness in the spotlight.

10. Follow the young André Kertész through this photo exhibition!

André Kertész, a 20th-century Hungarian-born photographer, is renowned for his contributions to photographic composition and photojournalism. While many know him for his iconic works captured in Paris and the US, a new exhibition at the Hungarian National Museum invites you to explore his roots. 'Kertész / Copies' provides intimate glimpses into his relationships with family and friends, as well as various locations in and around Budapest.

11. Fight global climate change with a fun-filled 24-hour walk

Are you ready for a challenge? Join the team of 24 The Planet in a nonstop 24-hour walk to raise funds for combating global climate change. Their work has evolved into a global movement, and this year, Budapest is joining Amsterdam and New York as a new location. The concept is straightforward: participants, backed by friends and family, walk continuously for 24 hours in the City park to raise funds and awareness for the battle against climate change. All proceeds are donated to Justdiggit, an NGO dedicated to regreening dry and degraded land in Africa to cool down the planet. Pop in for an hour or stay for the full 24 – good vibes are guaranteed.
