After the festive season’s abundance of feasting, drinking, and loafing, the New Year’s arrival inspires many resolutions to introduce uplifting life changes. However, January’s combination of sub-zero temperatures, driving snow, and gray days can sway the determination of even the most headstrong in Hungary… and hey, we still have a long time before swimsuit season begins, anyway. For those in Budapest who are ready to give up on New Year’s resolutions now, check out these tempting spots for refreshing beers, scrumptious sweets, or for puffing on just one more cigarette.

Resolution: drink less alcohol

At Christmastime, we are constantly joining friends to toast the season with cold beers and glasses of wine, followed by a sparkling champagne binge at New Year’s Eve – all inevitably leading to a horrendous hangover that haunts us into committing to cut down on alcohol in the dozen months ahead. However, Budapest is a difficult place to follow through on this pledge, with so many cozy pubs, wild clubs, and wonderful wine bars citywide… so, when friends call for another night out over “just a drink or two”, there are plenty of places to go where we can temporarily pretend that moderation will be our new game plan for partying. If you prefer elegant and trendy surroundings while succumbing to liquid temptation, take a look at our recent roundup of popular new bars like Apropós and Liebling – or if you’d like to fall off the wagon alongside folks who never climbed aboard in the first place, we recommend some of the city’s best dive bars.

Resolution: lose weight

After several weeks of holiday-season feasting, many of us start the New Year with great ambitions to drop a few pounds by eating right and working out to eventually earn a stunning body for summertime. Still, even as our intentions are rejuvenated with every look in the mirror, it’s extremely easy to forget about this resolution after just a few days here in Budapest, because the city features a huge variety of craving-inducing eateries like doughnut shops, pizza-slice purveyors, street-food vendors, and many merchants selling indulgent Magyar delicacies like lángos and kürtőskalács. Sweet options include the melt-in-your-mouth macarons at Chez Dodo near the Basilica, chocolate-smothered Belgian waffles from Habos Gofri on Ferenciek Square, and creamy cakes sold on almost every corner, while mouthwateringly meaty treats range from the savory burgers of Black Cab to the succulent sausages of Faszaládé.
