Collective Decorative Art Exhibition

Not too long ago, the dramatically varying aesthetic styles of different regions worldwide gave distinctive character to the diverse cultures that lived amid their iconic designs, but with the onset of globalization and omnipresent international media, these traditionally idiosyncratic essences are being melded together indiscriminately. Hungarian artist Imre Lepsényi explores the uncharted future of global decorative arts, and attempts to identify local representations through the jumble of interconnected culture. Creative gastronomy is another important theme of Budapest Design Week, and in honor of the delicious cheeses that guest-of-honor Holland is renowned for, the city’s most popular new-wave confectioneries – the three Sugar! shops, found in varied locations – are baking up special avant-garde cheesecakes loaded with unconventionally scrumptious ingredients, all made with impressive visual flair and impeccable taste; these will only be available while Design Week is under way. October 3-12: Sugar! – Pest VI, Paulay Ede u. 48; Pest IV, Petőfi u. 35; Buda II, Fény u. 20-22. www.sugarshop.hu

Made with a blend of Japanese paper and synthetic resin, these light and durable marine-hued jewelry artworks not only emulate the chaotically fascinating patterns of watery ripples, they are also waterproof, so that they could actually be worn during a elegant evening in Neptune’s palace. The knowledgeable guides of Chainless Budapest lead biking tours around downtown to showcase venues and clandestine corners where recycled spaces and materials are used to create genuinely ingenious attractions, and during Design Week they offer two English-language excursions that reveal some of the city’s hippest creative hangouts.
