Long gone are the days when second-hand clothes were considered embarrassing. More and more people realize that there are unique alternatives for the fast fashion stores' short-lived trends and dime-a-dozen pieces. If crowded malls and pompous boutiques make you cringe, you and these lovable vintage havens are a great match.

A silk scarf from the 20s, a sweet brooch from our grandmothers' youth, or a pair of high-waisted, acid wash jeans - the usual suspects when it comes to clothes and accessories that you did not have the heart to get rid of, so you buried them in the bottom of your wardrobe and they haven't seen daylight ever since. Until now, since 'vintage' is back in style. We've already had a introducing vintage treasure islands such as Antifactory, Iguana, , , Ómama and , but we decided to scan through Budapest's vintage scene one more time around.

Ludovika Vintage

Ludovika, located in Rumbach Sebestyén Street, boasts a varied selection of second-hand goodies ranging from porcelain swans and deer through Céline skirts to an early-century snakeskin clutch from Japan. Speaking of clutches, Ludovika is probably strongest in the leather bag and shoe department, but also specializes in revamped designer clothes. The shop's vibe is friendly and welcoming, which is further enhanced by the girls' two puppies. Leaving without buying something is impossible, so don't even bother trying.

Cydonia Vintage (ceased)

Cydonia Vintage is tiny but is packed with antique rarities such as an ozone generator machine from Hrabal's Cutting It Short or an original program brochure from Paris' Moulin Rouge. It is a bold statement, but Cydonia might be Budapest's most unique shop. In addition to the antique bric-a-bracs, clothes, jewellery, and heaps of accessories are also available. Even some costume-like masterpieces from the 20s and 30s pop up every now and then, since the most of the clothes are bequests. Cydonia also offers products from old Hungarian brands including Coco Chanel shoe replicas courtesy of the Schiffer Shoe Factory; but if you fancy, say, Christian Dior jackets, Cydonia won't disappoint, either.

Raindeer - Koszos Luxus

Raindeer, established by a trio of fashion-loving sisters, is just a few steps away from Klauzál Square and is known for its hipsterishly cute vibe - so much so that it would not seem out of place even in London's Camden Town. Many of the products - which all represent a higher quality then the usual thrift shop goods - are actually from England thanks to the eldest of the three sisters. The selection is made up of bijoux, backpacks, clutches, jeans, Raindeer's screen printed tees and jackets, and of course men's clothes.

Vintage Shop

Mrs. Ibolya Blázsev, the owner of Vintage Shop has been dealing with unique clothes and accessories for twenty years and used to write articles about second-hand clothing for a Hungarian fashion magazine back in the day when Budapest's Grand Boulevard had more boutiques than bars. Vintage Shop specializes in wedding dresses, party attire, and costume-like outfits, and there's no shortage of bijoux, either. The costumers are mostly theatre people and artists, though there are exceptions to this rule; as it is evidenced by one of the owner's favourite stories. Two middle-aged women were unable to choose between two wedding dresses. She asked them about the future husband so that she could help, but the ladies just giggled and told her that there is none yet, and then bought both dresses. Apropos: prices are fair, so if you can't resist the urge to buy multiple wedding dresses, you won't go broke in doing so.

TRASH13

TRASH13 is the punk rock-flavored store of Juli Pusztai and Fanni' Vas where Slayer tees, western-style mint suede jackets and floral Anna Sui wallets, and the accessories of the store's own brand - not surprisingly called TRASH13 - coexist in perfect peace and harmony. The girls have been friends since forever, and TRASH13 has deepened their friendship even further. Their favourite customer was an Australian girl who was so immersed in trying on clothes, talking, and shopping that she somehow left her wet bikini bottom in the store and then returned for it in endless shame.
