Since opening, Baalbek has worked with Lebanese chefs, keeping the traditions of authentic Middle Eastern cuisine at the heart of its kitchen. The table can quickly fill up with classic mezze, freshly baked pita, hummus, fattoush, baba ghanoush, grilled dishes and house-made specialities, with sharing the meal being just as much a part of the experience as the food itself. It's worth arriving without having to rush anywhere afterwards. The Danube-side setting, cocktails and shisha all lend themselves to a slow evening with friends or a long dinner. The terrace is particularly inviting during late-summer and Indian summer days, when it's still pleasantly warm during the day but the cooler evenings make a flavour-packed dinner and a drink feel all the more appealing. Baalbek is therefore more than simply a restaurant – it can easily become a full evening out with a Middle Eastern atmosphere in the heart of Budapest.

Budapest Contemporary (BCT)
If you're looking for a cultural programme to make the most of the pleasant early-autumn weather, Bálna Budapest will host the fourth edition of Budapest Contemporary from 2 to 4 October. Contemporary art remains at the heart of the exhibition and fair, but this year marks a new chapter, with design, fashion and contemporary jewellery each getting their own dedicated section. Nearly 40 leading contemporary art galleries will present their selections at BCT, bringing thousands of artworks together under one roof. Visitors can browse the works, meet gallery representatives, artists and art professionals in person, and even purchase artworks at the fair. The new design section is built around The Collector's Home, recreating the fictional home of a contemporary art collector where contemporary and vintage furniture, pieces by young Hungarian designers, floral installations and artworks come together. A special stand by Kata Szegedi explores the relationship between fashion and fine art, while the Testközelben / Close to the Body exhibition presents contemporary jewellery by 20 Hungarian artists. The three-day event will also feature guided tours, professional and public programmes, as well as activities for children, making BCT more than just an art fair - it's a diverse cultural meeting point too. Cziniel Cukrászda & Kávéház
In Budakeszi, one of the best ways to spend an early-autumn day is to combine time in nature with a leisurely café stop, and Cziniel Confectionery & Café in Gesztenyés Garden makes a good starting point for both. With its large trees and leafy surroundings, the park is particularly atmospheric during Indian summer, whether you're heading out for a walk or planning a family day out, while sunny weather still leaves plenty of opportunities to spend time outdoors. A visit to Cziniel is also easy to combine with a day trip to Budakeszi. You can simply stop by for coffee and cake, or make a full weekend lunch part of the day. Alongside the classic confectionery selection, there's an all-day café menu and chef's specials, so Cziniel works just as well for a longer family get-together as it does for a quick sweet treat. The spacious terrace is especially inviting on mild autumn days, when we're not quite ready to give up sitting outside. And as the days get shorter, a hot coffee and a cake from the counter take on a completely different appeal from during the heat of summer.

Dunapark Café and Restaurant
Early autumn suits Szent István Park particularly well, and nearby Dunapark Café fits perfectly into the mood. Located on Pozsonyi Road, right next to the park, the café's huge panoramic windows bring the greenery almost directly into its bright Art Deco and Bauhaus-inspired interior. In the Indian summer sunshine, simply stopping for a coffee before continuing your walk through the park is already a lovely way to spend some time, but Dunapark's all-day menu offers plenty more. For breakfast, you can order Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon, beef pastrami or coriander avocado cream. If you're after something more filling, there's also house-made sourdough French toast with Gouda and spiced labneh, as well as Maghrebi shakshuka. On warmer early-autumn days, the homemade lemonades and refreshing drinks are still tempting, while in the afternoon you can pair your coffee with one of the café's own desserts, such as Pozsonyi guba. And if you're staying for more than cake, the lunch and dinner menu includes chicken paprikash, Hungarian-style beef with game sauce, skin-on salmon and spiced cauliflower steak. From a morning coffee to an evening dinner, Dunapark fits easily into a slow-paced day in Újlipótváros.

Etyeki Piknik
One of the most enjoyable Indian summer outings near Budapest is an autumn trip to Etyek, where the Gasztrosétány will come alive again on 10 and 11 October. With a history stretching back more than two decades, the Autumn Etyek Picnic brings together the atmosphere of the wine region, wines from local Etyek wineries, food, local hosts and plenty of music - all the ingredients for a laid-back weekend outside the city. There will be different styles of music to choose from across the various venues, with Péterfy Bori & Love Band, Co Lee and Animal Cannibals among those taking the stage. At Optimus, the final of the Fogd meg a borom! live music talent competition will be followed by a performance from Imago Mundi. On Sunday, Dumaszínház comedians will entertain audiences at six different locations, while Ham Ko Ham will bring another lively performance to the stage. Meanwhile, concerts, DJs, food-focused programmes and other activities will continue at venues along the Gasztrosétány throughout the weekend. Alongside the wines, you can also sample local flavours and specialities from regional producers. Add a glass of Etyek wine, a seasonal lunch, a stroll along the Gasztrosétány and a few good concerts, and you have all the ingredients for an easy-going weekend in the wine region.

Gundel
In the Indian summer sunshine, City Park remains a perfect choice for a long walk, a museum visit or even an afternoon at Széchenyi Thermal Bath, and it's easy to include the legendary Gundel Restaurantin your plans. Located at the entrance to the park near Heroes' Square for more than 130 years, Gundel fits naturally into a day spent exploring the area - and you don't necessarily need to plan a full meal. After a walk or a visit to the Museum of Fine Arts, simply stopping in Gundel's garden for a coffee and its iconic Gundel pancake can be a programme in itself. Surrounded by greenery, the garden is particularly inviting during Indian summer, when it's still pleasant to sit outside, even as the evenings begin to get cooler. If you have more time, you can also round off the day with a proper dinner. One of the highlights of the menu is the National 11, a selection of iconic Hungarian dishes from Gundel's culinary heritage, overseen by corporate chef András Wolf and executive chef Róbert Vérten. Gundel doesn't necessarily have to be a destination in itself, but can easily become part of a full day in City Park - whether that means a walk, some culture, coffee and dessert or a leisurely dinner, depending on how long you want to stretch out the Indian summer.

International concerts from Live Nation
Budapest's concert calendar won't be slowing down once the Indian summer is over, with Live Nation bringing artists from a wide range of genres to the city throughout late September and October. On 29 September, progressive metal band Haken return to Dürer Kert with their epic songs and powerful live show, following their last sold-out Budapest concert in 2023 - this time with a refreshed line-up. On 1 October, Blackbriar take the stage at Analog Music Hall, while Jack Savoretti performs at RaM-ArT Theatre on the same evening. Deep Purple arrive at the Papp László Budapest Sportaréna on 2 October, followed by A$AP Rocky and his Don't Be Dumb World Tour on 5 October. The rapper will showcase songs from his first new album in eight years, with the tour now expanded to 50 dates. On 6 October, genre-blending Lake Street Dive, known for their easy-going sound, perform at Dürer Kert, while Joshua Idehen takes over Turbina Cultural Centre on 9 October. His show promises a distinctive mix of music and poetry, combining contemporary poetry, electronic music and club culture with lyrics exploring personal and social themes. Allie X follows at A38 Ship on 10 October, but the live music calendar doesn't end there - there are plenty more international acts heading to Budapest before the end of the year.

Mahart Unlimited Prosecco Cruise
If you'd rather enjoy the last rays of Indian summer sunshine from the Danube than from the riverbank, the Mahart Prosecco Cruise is a great excuse to feel like a tourist in your own city for an hour. Riso Ristorante & Terrace
When summer isn't quite ready to say goodbye but the evenings are already getting cooler, it's easy to feel like the season is still going strong on the terrace of Riso Ristorante & Terrace, at the foot of Buda Castle. Just 100 metres from Vienna Gate, the restaurant has been welcoming guests since 2011, and its lush terrace surrounded by evergreen plants looks particularly inviting in the golden light of Indian summer. Whether it's a slow lunch, a leisurely dinner or simply a glass of prosecco, Riso is a good place to stretch out the terrace season a little longer, with nearby Buda Castle providing a distinctive backdrop. The kitchen focuses on Mediterranean flavours, with handmade fresh pasta, risottos, wood-fired pizzas and grilled dishes on the menu, accompanied by a selection of quality wines and cocktails. And when autumn eventually does take over, you don't have to give up the garden atmosphere altogether. The heated winter garden keeps the greenery and relaxed terrace feel going even in colder weather. Live music sets the mood on Tuesdays and Thursdays, while Wednesdays come with a DJ, making Riso a good choice for anything from a romantic dinner or a catch-up with friends to a business lunch. If you want to give autumn one last taste of summer, this is a good place to do it.

As summer slowly gives way to autumn, sunny walks around the city start to pair particularly well with heartier, warming dishes. Located on Piarista Street, SIMALIBA Belvárosi Csárda fits the mood perfectly. A modern yet authentic Hungarian csárda, it brings the familiar, home-style flavours of traditional Hungarian cuisine to the heart of Budapest. Spíler Biergarten
You don't have to travel all the way to Munich for a little Oktoberfest atmosphere: from 18 September to 4 October, Spíler Biergarten is bringing the beer festival to Dísz Square. Freshly tapped Oktoberfest beers and Hungarian craft favourites come with pretzels, crispy sausages, live music and fun activities, setting the scene for relaxed autumn evenings that fit perfectly with the Indian summer. The Beer Pass turns trying the different stops into a bit of a game, and those who complete the passport receive a limited-edition Spíler Biergarten bottle opener. There are also plenty of themed programmes along the way. A The Office quiz takes place on 24 September, while another event looks back at the golden age of ZeneTV with hits and music videos from the 2000s. On 1 October, the interactive Trónviszály mystery game invites participants to collect clues and solve the case, while Szomori Fiúk provide the live music on 2 October. Budapest residents can also join the venue's loyalty programme, which gives members a 25% discount. Lederhosen, of course, remain entirely optional.

Zichy Family Adventure Estate
If you'd like to turn Indian summer into a full weekend away, the Zichy Family Experience Estate near Bikács offers plenty to fill a couple of days. Set across 12 hectares, the nature-focused family experience hotel makes the most of its countryside surroundings. On pleasant autumn days, families can explore nature trails, woodland and meadows, playgrounds and adventure courses, while children can also meet the animals at the petting zoo, go pony riding and join animal-feeding sessions. Indoor play areas, as well as outdoor and indoor creative activities and organised entertainment programmes, help keep both younger and older children busy throughout the stay. There's plenty for adults too: a wine tasting at the Vincellér House or a sauna session can provide a few quieter hours in between family activities. If the weather turns cooler, the experience pools and jacuzzis at Harmatliget Wellness, along with the Herba Sauna World, offer an easy alternative to spending the day outdoors. Food is also an important part of the countryside experience, with a focus on home-style flavours, locally and regionally sourced ingredients, the culinary traditions of Tolna County and wines from Szekszárd. An autumn family break at Zichy, then, isn't only about keeping the children entertained - it can be a mix of experiences shared together and moments enjoyed separately.
