Since its premier at
Trafó
in 2006, the play that was adapted from
Sorokin
’s world-famous novel, and directed by
Kornél Mundruczó
has come a long way. Now, it returns to Trafó. It’s the same - yet still a little different.
Sorokin is an ambivalent, upsettingly exciting figure in the contemporary Russian literary-scene. His work has been translated to many languages; he is counted as the enfant terrible of the Russian culture while he has an unavoidable role in the public life and contemporary culture. The author doesn’t believe in the moral power of literature; the framework for his purely esthetic worldview is provided by his demonic fantasy and insight. His plays and novels provoke a new perspective and inspire their environment – this is why bringing them to the stage is an important challenge.
