25 April, 2015 marks the centenary of the beginning of the
Gallipoli Campaign
. During World War I, the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (aka ANZAC) landed at Anzac Cove as part of the invasion of the Gallipoli Peninsula by British forces against the
Ottoman

Empire
. Since 1916, this day is Anzac Day which commemorates all the Australians and New Zealanders "who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations" and "the contribution and suffering of all those who have served."

Accordingly, the April 2015 feature of the
Australian Film Club
is
Peter Weir
's classic Gallipoli. It is a fictional account of the events and the mateship of two young Australian men who gradually grow disillusione
d with the "glories" of the war. Another important theme of the film is the emergence of a unique Australian identity as a result of the failed campaign and loss of lives.
