A bizarre love triangle if there ever was one, this cult classic from Budapest's alternative scene of the 1980s revolves around a ditzy singer, her deaf-and-dumb zookeeper husband and her demanding, dipsomaniac lover, a virtuoso pianist who brings said husband into his synthpoppy band as a drummer. If the plot doesn't grab you, the music is flat-out fantastic, the cream of the Hungarian underground, Trabant and offshoots Balaton, underpinned by the haunting refrains of the incomparable Mihály Víg. It's also fascinating to see the kinds of concert venues where now legendary bands had to play in those days, boats, student clubs and community centres. This screening at the Bem cinema has English subtitles – some scenes also take place in London and, memorably, approaching the White Cliffs of Dover.
