At the third event of the
Concerto Open
series, showcasing some of the most versatile musicians of the 21st century,
Thomas Adès
will not only conduct the ensemble but also present his own composition Totentanz, written in memory of the Polish composer Witold
Lutosławski
. Adès is one of the most well known British composers from around the turn of the century, who is also a pianist and a conductor. Apart from his symphonic and chamber music compositions, the opera
The Tempest
, based on the
Shakespeare play
of the same name, is perhaps his most famous piece . Following its 2004 premier in London, the opera has been performed at the biggest opera houses in the world.
The
concert
will not only be exceptionally unforgettable because the composer will conduct his own piece, but also because Totentanz is one of Thomas Adès’ most recent compositions, penned in 2013, and as a result, it has only been performed in concert a handful of times.
Adès' Totentanz will be preceded on the programme by the compositions of two well known and popular Russian composers:
Prokofiev
's Autumnal Sketch will be followed by
Tchaikovsky
's symphonic poem Francesca da Rimini.
Prokofiev: Autumnal Sketch, op. 8
Tchaikovsky: Francesca da Rimini - symphonic poem, op. 32
Thomas Adès: Totentanz
Conducted by: Thomas Adès
