When this article was first published, Cheese Budapest was announced as a two-day event, but the organisers have since shortened it to a single day. They have promised that cheese lovers can look forward to a full two-day festival in 2027, on 10 - 11 April.
Although it was only the second market hall to open in the city, Rákóczi Market Hall is not currently among Budapest's most popular markets. These days, many people visit mainly for the restaurants and shops lining the market hall, with a few places clearly standing out: Japanese-inspired Nem Ramen, Korean street-food spot Gim-Tteok and Matteo's Italian Classics.
Alongside its usual day-to-day life, the market hall also hosts various events from time to time, bringing some extra buzz to the space. Most recently, it was a key venue for the Józsefváros Jazz Festival, followed by the Autumn Festival of Choirs. On 17 and 18 October, it will welcome another event as the very first Cheese Budapest comes to the market hall.
On the first day of the two-day event, from 6pm, visitors can taste a selection of cheeses alongside fermented drinks and wines, followed by an opportunity for professional networking. The programme continues from 10am the next day, starting with a live concert before moving on to a quiz, a cheese recognition competition and round-table discussions featuring various Hungarian cheesemakers and gastronomy experts. Historian Csaba Katona will also give a talk exploring the history of cheese.
On Sunday, visitors can buy cheeses from a total of 24 Hungarian producers, while guided cheese and wine tours will also be part of the programme. A series of workshops will offer the chance to learn how to stretch parenyica cheese, make mozzarella and discover which cheeses pair best with different beers, whiskies and even teas.
