There you have the chic 5-star Kimpton BEM Budapest. Beautifully renovated by experts on the outside and designed by the legendary Marcel Wanders on the inside, this newly opened hotel wraps you in a cosy atmosphere with a touch of whimsy. We explored its playful spaces, from the woodland-themed AGOS Restaurant and Danube-inspired Bar Huso to the stellar rooftop suites.

Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants, part of IHG Hotels & Resorts' luxury and lifestyle portfolio, has opened its first boutique hotel in Budapest. And if you're looking for a unique place to stay on your next trip to the Hungarian capital, you should definitely check it out. The hotel has made its home in a gorgeous 19th-century mansion on the Buda side, somewhere between Margaret Island and the Castle District and just steps away from the Danube – where the riverbank offers nice views of the Parliament, by the way!

Hungarian tales meet Marcel Wanders

Kimpton BEM Budapest boasts 127 elegant rooms, a restaurant, a bar, and a rooftop bar – all centred around Hungary's myths. The designer, Dutch maestro Marcel Wanders, is renowned for his unconventional and imaginative designs – and he's certainly left his mark on the aesthetics here.

Have you spotted the upside-down eggs at reception? That's a signature touch from Marcel Wanders, one of many playful elements scattered throughout the hotel (keep an eye out for his quirky lamps, vases, ceramics and rugs!).

Stepping into the stunning building, you'll instantly feel welcome – like you've walked into a friend's (well, royal friend's) living room, where you're greeted with a glass of champagne. Books, collectibles, and treasures from around the globe are piled tastefully on the shelves, and you can't miss the centrepiece: a magnificent golden stag. This is a nod to Hungary's rich folklore, bringing with it a nature-filled, woodland vibe that reflects throughout the rooms as well.

Tale of the Miracle Stag

The ancient legend of the Miracle Stag (Csodaszarvas in Hungarian), is a significant myth in Hungarian folklore that tells the origins of the Hungarian people, illustrating their migration and the founding of their homeland.

Rooms and suites

And that's not the only mythological creature that comes to life here. You'll also explore an underwater world and meet the 'huso', the beluga sturgeon - a mystical denizen of the Danube and Hungary's answer to the Loch Ness monster. These themes of lush green woods and deep blue underwater realm, are woven into the rooms, too, ensuring you feel as though you've stepped into a fairy-tale world wherever you go. Alongside the playful and elegant design, the rooms come with luxurious bedding and walk-in showers. There are also 11 suites, each featuring indulgent free-standing tubs and spacious balconies.

On the top floor, the Cosmos and Observatory Suites await (which can be adjoined), offering 120 square metres of space, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room, a dining room, and a kitchenette. The Observatory Suite also boasts an 82-square-meter private rooftop terrace, perfect for gatherings or romantic stargazing. The boutique hotel also features a wellness area, complete with a 24/7 fitness centre, hot tub, and steam room.

If you are a staying guest, you can settle into one of the comfy armchairs, and a receptionist will join you to handle the check-in process. If you’re a walk-in guest eager to explore top-notch gastronomic treats, you’re also in the right place.

AGOS

Turn right, and you'll arrive at the woodland-inspired AGOS restaurant, with two majestic columns taking centre stage, evoking towering trees. Call it a fine bistro; it's not only a feast for the eye but also a gastronomic journey through the Mediterranean with Hungarian flair. The menu features mouthwatering dishes, some prepared in a Josper grill, but if you try only one thing, make it the Venison Wellington. Other highlights include Smoky tuna carpaccioWild boar goulash, and the rich dessert Black Forest – in line with the theme. In addition to dinner, you can also enjoy breakfast, bottomless brunch on Saturdays, business lunch, and à la carte options.

Bar Huso

If you're in the mood for drinks, turn left at the entrance, and you'll be welcomed into Bar Huso. Here, you can savour exceptional Hungarian wines and indulge in creative, sumptuous cocktails within a design-led space – be sure to admire the deep blue fish scale tiles! The bar also offers a bar menu, and on weekends, you can clink your glasses while enjoying live DJ sets in the background.

Fennen

Nestled at the top level, a lovely rooftop bar, Fennen awaits. It's a hidden gem with a lush garden and a pretty – and heated – glass pavilion. Sit under the stars on the verdant terrace during summer months or settle down in its cosy and pretty conservatory right next to the bar, it's an ideal spot to unwind. Order top-notch drinks and even Cuban cigars, if you feel like it.

Other services

Kimpoton BEM Budapest is also a great choice for events, offering several smaller meeting rooms (Turul Chamber, Golden Stag Corner, M.W. Salon) and a grand ballroom that accommodates up to 120 guests.
