While running clubs have long existed in Hungary and abroad, many are focused on training and tied to specific brands such as Adidas, New Balance, etc. But Viki Környei, the founder of Running Latte Club, envisioned something different: a social running club built on community. Inspired by a similar club in Amsterdam, she and her partner, Attila Nyári, decided to create a running experience that was less about competition and more about connection.
Who said running is an individual sport?
The concept was simple: combine the joy of running with the camaraderie of coffee. After each run, participants gather at a café to enjoy a delicious beverage and chat with fellow runners. The name Running Latte Club perfectly captures this idea.
In fact, research shows that
IN AREAS SUCH AS THE BLUE ZONES, THE SECRET TO LONGEVITY IS TO BE SURROUNDED BY A LOVING COMMUNITY.
Last autumn, while exploring Amsterdam, Viki and Attila stumbled upon a unique running club. Unlike the typical brand-sponsored clubs, this one had a refreshing vibe and a strong sense of community. The experience, coupled with the allure of a post-run coffee, sparked the idea for their own running club.
The finishing line: Coffee shops!
Who wouldn't be motivated by the promise of a delicious latte or a rich dark roast after a good run? The Running Latte Club was born from this simple yet powerful concept. With Attila handling the design, operations, partnerships, and merchandising, the club has quickly gained popularity since its launch in February 2024 and continues to grow and thrive.
But what does it look like?
While the Running Latte Club might seem like a simple running group, it offers much more. The club's meet-up point serves as a gathering place for runners of all levels. Whether you're a seasoned marathoner or just starting out, everyone is welcome. The minimum distance for a run is 5k, but there are also 7k and longer runs offered each month. Two runs take place each week, one is on Wednesday evening, the other on Saturday or Sunday morning, and it alternates.
One of the club's most appealing aspects is its inclusivity. Participants come from diverse backgrounds, and there are no strict requirements for running ability. Viki and her team provide guidance for newcomers, ensuring that everyone feels comfortable and safe. The 'chill zone,' or café, offers a relaxing atmosphere for those who prefer to walk or take a break.
Beyond physical fitness, the Running Latte Club fosters personal growth. Being part of a community can help individuals discover new qualities about themselves.
Like attracts like
Although the team members approach to running might differ, they are like-minded people who are open and want to connect. The club's English-speaking environment also attracts international members, creating a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere.
In just a few months, the Running Latte Club has already made a positive impact on its members. Some have experienced reduced anxiety and depression, while others have decided to stay in Hungary after finding the club. These stories highlight the club's power to transform lives.
RLC Plus for PROs
The Running Latte Club's most notable member is Jason Clowes, a professional runner and coach from New Zealand. A former participant himself, Jason now leads weekly training sessions for those looking to improve their running or achieve specific goals like a marathon or half-marathon. These sessions are available for an additional fee of HUF 8,500 per month.
A passion project
For Viki, the Running Latte Club has evolved from a hobby into a true passion project. Despite the self-employed nature of the venture, Viki and her team reinvest any profits back into the club, ensuring its continued growth and success.
If you're interested in trying the Running Latte Club, attending a single session is a great way to experience the community. However, for regular participation, registering through the link in their Instagram bio is recommended. This will grant you access to a private WhatsApp group where you can receive additional tips, and discounts, and connect with other members.
According to the New York Times, this could be the new dating app
As The New York Times suggests, running clubs can be a modern-day dating app. Whether you're seeking new friendships, romantic connections, or simply a way to meet people from different backgrounds, the Running Latte Club offers a unique opportunity.
So why not give it a try? You might be surprised by what you discover. Just remember to arrive on time for your first session to avoid missing out!
