Many are elegant, some have been renovated, others could use a little TLC. But whatever their condition, Budapest’s staircases are a unique feature of the city and our photographers were granted access into various residential blocks around town to capture their mysterious and mesmerising forms.

Eccentric or concentric, grandiose or functional, the varied staircases of Budapest invite the viewer into the minds of the designers who created them generations ago. Sadly, it’s a world that’s usually closed off to the outside world, as by definition they can only be accessed by the building’s residents and their visitors. Fortunately, however, our photographers were able to cross the threshold and give these features a whole new perspective.
