Created by Russian-born violinist Aleksey Igudesman, The Music Critic portrays the opinions of the various opinion-makers of the day when later iconic pieces of classical music were first performed. The production, starring Oscar-nominated actor John Malkovich, exposes the erroneous judgements of those who are meant to know more about music than the composers themselves.
Tchaikovsky is referred to as a ‘self-inflated mediocrity’, Brahms ‘a scoundrel’, and so on, quotes taken from actual reviews.
Over nearly two hours, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy and many more are taken apart, with help from the Danubia Orchestra Óbuda, known for their adventurous forays into uncharted musical territory.
His grandparents of Croatian origin, John Malkovich has appeared several times in Hungary before. His tour takes in Ljubljana, Brno and, perhaps controversially, Moscow.
