Erkel Theatre (Erkel Színház) in II. János Pál pápa tér is not only one of the most modern theatres in Budapest, but also the largest-capacity musical theatre in Hungary. It strives to make theatre and opera accessible for everyone. It functioned as an independent entity until 1951 until its annexation to the State Opera. It underwent renovation in 1961-62 while 45 years later, it was closed for technical reasons. The theatre reopened in 2013, following a thorough reconstruction thanks to which the entrance and a part of the boxes are now accessible for disabled theatregoers. The auditorium has received a complete makeover.
