Budapest

Erkel Theatre (Erkel Színház) in II. János Pál pápa Square is not only one of the most modern theatres of Budapest, but also the largest capacity musical theatre of Hungary. It strives at making theatre and opera accessible for everyone. It functioned as an independent entity until 1951 and its annexation to the State Opera. It underwent renovation in 1961-62, 45 years later, it had to be closed down for technical reasons. The theatre reopened in November 2013, following a thorough reconstruction thanks to which the entrance and a part of the boxes are now accessible for disabled theatregoers and the auditorium has received a complete makeover.
