One of the oldest railway stations in Budapest, local Rákospalota-Újpest station north of town, is due to be renovated. Replacing it with a spacious, step-free one, with covered, modern platforms, facilitated by a cycle-friendly underpass.
The renovation of the Rákospalota-Újpest-Veresegyház-Vác train line leading north from Budapest has begun, the first stage being the overhaul of Rákospalota-Újpest station.
The line between Budapest and Vác is the oldest in Hungary’s long railway tradition. From alongside Nyugati station in 1846, a steam locomotive left for Vác with national poet Sándor Petőfi on it, the first train journey in the country’s history.
A few kilometres up from town, Rákospalota-Újpest station was built in 1881 and is looking its age. Initial development plans have just been drawn up as part of the Greater Budapest Railway Strategy by the design teams of Sporaarchitects, RJZS and Paragram.
