The HÉV suburban rail lines to Ráckeve and Csepel will have new underground terminals in town, connected by a tunnel under the Danube – Budapest’s planned metro line 5. The first test drillings have just taken place to create this transport resource, aimed at transforming mobility between the city and its southern suburbs.

With the aim of a more liveable Budapest on a human scale, where people use public transport rather than get in their cars, the urban extension of the southern HÉV lines will make the capital better linked to its southern outskirts.

One route will be introduced underground at Közvágóhíd beside the Müpa cultural centre, so the rails will disappear underground from the Danube embankment in Ferencváros, opening up the riverbank for public use. Work has just begun near Kálvin tér, on Múzeum körút.

The first test drillings took place along the route of the planned tunnel: 100 will be carried out every 50 metres over the course of a month. The boreholes around Kálvin tér penetrate to a depth of up to 65-70 metres, to assess the geological layers formed over different periods, as well as the structure, composition, bearing capacity, condition and characteristics of the soil.
