It may seem like there's nothing but shop closures these days, but a new package-free shop has just opened its doors. Kegyes Vegyes marks a growing trend in sustainability here in Budapest, and the popularity of package-free shops. With a large selection and reasonable prices, this latest addition has already attracted a healthy number of customers despite its location out of the centre.

Reading the consumer reviews on the shop’s recently launched Facebook page, it’s clear that there's number of factors attracting shoppers. The large selection of products is sourced from domestic producers, and sold by a knowledgeable and staff. Affordable prices also count, important as package-free stores tend to be much dearer.

Located in District XVII, Kegyes Vegyes is mainly frequented by local residents, but some shoppers trek further to take advantage of the great prices and varied selection.

The name is a play on words, as kegyes means ‘gracious’, vegyes ‘mixed’, so the shop is a wonderful variety of wonderful products, while doing good for the environment by reducing waste.

The store opened in March and their Facebook page is updated with promotions, sales and novelties, as well as postings about environmental awareness in a light-hearted manner.

They remain open despite the shutdown, and their website shows the entire stock of goods, as well as how a package-free shop works.

So, what can you buy here? Dry goods, spices, cereals, seeds, toiletries, detergents and cleaners, pasta, oils and vinegars, to name but a few. Outside the usual package-free offers, you'll also find eggs, cordials, local honey and even candies and sweets, such as the combination of dried fruits and oatmeal known as Attila dorongja.

There are also slices of dried cranberry and cashew, crumbled caramel made according to old tradition and various hazelnut products to delight the taste buds.
