With just one month left until the residency application window closes for UK nationals living in Hungary, the British Embassy in Hungary is encouraging all those who have not already done so, to apply for residency today. The process is free and relatively straightforward. After 1 January 2022, residency in Hungary can still be applied for, but the procedure is far more complex.

UK nationals who can prove they were living in Hungary before 1 January 2021, and who wish to stay here, must apply for residency by 31 December. This includes those who have a residence permit issued before Hungary’s accession to the EU, ie before 2004, and those married to a Hungarian national, unless they are Hungarian citizens, too, or dual nationals.

In all, 1,200 UK nationals have already applied for this straightforward scheme, but many more might be out there who need to protect their residency rights before the pressing deadline of 31 December.

According to  Paul Fox, British Ambassador to Hungary: With just one month until the deadline, ensuring you have applied for residency is a matter of urgency in order to protect your rights to live in Hungary and your future. Those of who have British friends, neighbours or family members who arrived in Hungary before 1 January, should ask them whether they have applied and, if not, encourage them to start the process now”.

Since the main consequences of the Brexit referendum came into effect on 1 January 2021, the British Embassy in Hungary has been running a range of activities to encourage UK nationals to apply for residency such as town hall meetings, Q&As and announcements on social media.
