The staff of the Hungarian Ornithological Society have found sleeping dormice in former bird homes at Népliget, a major public park in south Pest.

Főkert, which looks after parks and gardens in Budapest, placed 950 bird boxes in Népliget in 2020. Any remaining ones must always be emptied at the end of the summer period so that the nest would be ready for the next breeding season.

The work is carried out by the Hungarian Ornithological Society, who started with the first 200 boxes at Népliget park. Halfway through the task, they found a few new tenants. A total of five dormice were photographed in four boxes and traces were found in an additional 30 boxes.

The dormouse is a nocturnal rodent and moves primarily around trees at canopy level, so people only see them relatively rarely. This lovely creature sleeps in winter but in other seasons prefers to move to dry, safe places such as bird boxes. Sweet dreams, and see you next spring!
