City walks are great, especially if they involve the participants in interactive puzzles themed around fascinating aspects of the urban surroundings. Such is the joint trail created by UrbanGo and Eurohandball, Spot more is not a city walk in the classic sense, but an app and a package handed over at the starting point. Interactivity is the key throughout, with teamwork required in several places – as we found out!
On Múzeum körút, at the first location – about which we received the exact information after the initial appointment – we found the map delineating the course, two packs of cards explaining the tasks, and the code to activate the app, after which the treasure hunt could start in earnest. Although the information cards proved to be a great help when used, in case of a serious jam we could ask for extra help through the app, and at some stops we also had to enter in the solution.
The total of 16 stops are connected by longer or shorter walking sections, you don’t have to use public transport. but there is a task to be solved at a certain bus stop. The trail follows atmospheric streets as Bródy Sándor, Kecskeméti and Veres Pálné utca, and it has no set time limit, so you can sit down somewhere as you go round, for a coffee or a bite. We completed it a comfortable pace, with a few requests for help, in less than two and a half hours.
The tasks are creative all the way through, with a nice balance to them. The quest, the puzzles and stops have been thoughtfully put together, all somehow related to handball and the European Championship. The puzzles are designed to keep hardcore handball lovers on their toes, but they shouldn’t deter those who might sit down just to watch a match during a major tournament, amid downtown bustle and turn-of-the-century buildings.
Overall, the Spot more trail achieves its goal, bringing together in an educational, creative and playful way not only handball fans, and those who have tickets for the European Championships, but also those who like the more traditional kind of urban walk, who might even come to the arena in January 2022.
