The ticket office for public transport at Örs vezér tere is to close next Monday, 31 May, after 50 years of service. Gomba, ‘The Mushroom’, was opened before the SUGÁR shopping centre alongside, both classic examples of Socialist-Realist urban architecture. The fate of the Mushroom, a popular meeting place amid the hubbub of this busy transport hub, isn’t yet known.

With more people buying their transport tickets online and from machines, particularly in light of the pandemic, a number of over-the-counter sales points have disappeared around Budapest. The latest is Gomba, ‘The Mushroom’, opened back in 1971.

Serving the HÉV train to Csömör and Gödöllő, the ticket office has been superseded by machines nearby and in the metro station. Örs vezér tere is the terminus of red metro line 2.
