Bridges are a hot topic in Budapest right now. Does the city need new ones? And, if so, where? One such is a crossing proposed for Óbuda in northern Budapest, whose feasibility and necessity are now under examination. A public consultation on the construction of Aquincum Bridge will begin in May – although this isn't the first one to be planned here.

In December 2020, Budapest Transport authority BKK issued a public procurement for a detailed feasibility study of Aquincum Bridge and related road network. The proposed 700-metre-long bridge would connect main road 10 with an access road to the M3 motorway and could be built beside the Northern Railway Link.

The tender was won by Speciálterv Építőmérnöki Kft, New, detailed study plans are expected to be prepared in the autumn.

Aquincum Bridge is not a completely new idea: the infrastructure of the Hungarian capital has been based on the construction of a new Danube crossing and the related transport network here for decades.

According to Samu Balogh, Chief of the City Planning Department, Budapest is preparing these blueprints by examining the technical solutions envisioned 40-50 years ago and the so-called Masterplan prepared in 2000.

In addition, it will examine, together with the involvement of the districts concerned and by asking the people of Budapest, whether there is a real need to build a new bridge and, if so, what kind of capacity and transport network it should have.

The plans will look at possible alternatives, from which the best will be selected. Urban liveability and contributing to reducing road traffic should underscore the successful suggestion.
