Renovated and almost ready for action, the Rác Baths have yet to reopen due to a long-running legal dispute. Now the matter is being dealt with by the national trustee authorities, Nemzeti Reorganizációs, which is auctioning off the historic spa complex from 26 March. The starting price is five billion forints, and the electronic bidding runs until 12 April.

The long-running and sorry saga of the Rác Baths, the venerable spa complex in the Tabán, may soon be drawing to a close. Shut down permanently in the 1990s, these historic baths were given an award-winning renovation from 2007 onwards. Then everything became entangled in legal red tape.

Recently, specialist photographer Tamás Pataki accessed these Ottoman-era buildings to capture how they looked. Sadly, the baths have been off-limits to the general public for decades.

With the upcoming auction, hopefully a buyer can be found to carry out the final stage of renovation and at last open one of Budapest’s finest spas.
