In a time of great hardship worldwide, one group in Budapest is working to make the lives of others a little better. The Budapest Street Project is a new initiative in Hungary’s capital aiming to bring necessities to the large homeless population who sorely need the aid.

Collecting for the homeless

In January, the BSP held a sock collection drive, a part of their Good Deed Volunteer Events. It’s just one way the group gives back – in the spirit of ‘give us bread but give us roses too’, they also organise fun activities such as board-game afternoons at homeless shelters, while volunteers help to build permanent housing with Streets to Homes

With the successful sock collection drive behind them, BSP is launching their next initiative, collecting new or used, washed winter hats this Saturday, 6 March. More information can be found on the Facebook event.

Why hats?

It may seem too late to be donating winter hats as March arrives, but the group is quick to correct this assumption. “Winter hats are useful three seasons of the year for those who sleep rough,” says Alex MacIntosh, the Canadian behind BSP. “And they are always in short supply.”

How else to help?

For those who can't attend but still want to help by purchasing hats or making a donation, please visit their dedicated Events page. BSP is always looking for volunteers to help with other creative tasks and events organising, with an online volunteer form for anyone interested.

If anyone has any questions or ideas to share, they can reach Alex at +36 30 670 7884 or budapeststreetproject@gmail.com.
