Budapest-based sporaarchitects, also responsible for the sleek Fővám tér and Gellért tér stations on metro line 4, are planning one of the most important transfer hubs on the new Southern Ring. The development is one of the most significant in the Hungarian capital in the last hundred years.

The Southern Ring connects Kelenföld with Ferencváros, facilitated by three new stops being created for this gigaproject. After the stops at Közvágóhíd and Nádorkert, the architectural rendering of Népliget station will also soon be underway, one of the most important transfer points of the whole development.

Rail link to the airport?

“The station will be built in the corner of Népliget, a large park in south Pest, a connection to suburban destinations by train or even by rail to Budapest Airport, in the future,” writes Dávid Vitézy, CEO of the Budapest Development Centre.

The winning design by sporaarchitects, who created the dazzling Fővám tér and Gellért tér stations on contemporary Metro line 4, is the one selected by the BDC and National Infrastructure Development. The challenge of the concept is to provide passengers with convenient, secure and fast transfer between the railway and metro stations.

New Népliget

“The platforms are located north-east of Üllői út, the walkway leading to the metro station and tram will also be a stop for local buses. This connection also serves the Bihari utca and József Attila housing estates. The continuation of the walkway on the other side of the railway will be Népliget’s new southern entrance.”

Design permissions for the Nádorkert stops at Közvágóhíd and Újbuda have already been completed, while plans for Népliget station are expected to be completed this year.
