With fines in place for anyone travelling on public transport without a face covering, free masks are now being distributed at major stations.

Budapest transport company BKK will be distributing free masks at five main metro stations around town: Deák Ferenc tér, Kálvin tér, Kelenföld, Keleti and Széll Kálmán tér. According to BKK, thanks to the tightened control these days and the threat of fines, almost everyone is wearing a mask again on Budapest public transport.

From Friday, 18 September, the use of masks will be mandatory not only on public transport, but also in cinemas, theatres and other cultural institutions, shops and markets. Those breaking the rules can expect a spot fine of 15,000 forints, shop owners 50,000 forints.
