Lines on the HÉV suburban train network will receive much-needed renovation work, with modernised carriages, reduced travel times and extended routes all announced.

As part of new development plans, the lines in Csepel (H7) and Ráckeve (H6) will be extended underground to Kálvin tér, so that passengers will have the opportunity to transfer directly to metro 3 and 4. In addition, the H7 will no longer cut off the National Theatre and surrounding areas from the Daube; a new station will be established at Közvágóhíd with the intention of connecting the northern and southern HÉV lines with a tunnel under the river. This will be the Metro 5. The project is expected to last seven to ten years, with the first track renovation works beginning as early as 2023.

The old carriages of the HÉV network will also be replaced, with low-floor, air-conditioned, modern trains to completely replace the busy H5 line to Szentendre, H6 to Ráckeve and H7 to Csepel. The first trains may arrive as early as 2023, and entire fleet is expected to be replaced by 2025.

In addition, further changes are expected, as stops will be made more accessible, passenger information with be updated, P+R car parks will be established, the current speed limit will be lifted and the speed of the vehicles will be increased.
