A new underground walkway is being built beneath Várfok utca, linking Városmajor, Széll Kálmán tér and a new museum. The renovation of this Buda transport hub was carried out in 2014 but budget and time constraints didn’t allow for the passage to be constructed. Now it’s back on the agenda.

Dávid Vitézy, CEO of the Budapest Development Centre, has announced that construction of a passageway under Várfok utca alongside Széll Kálmán tér is underway. Outlined by designer János Schulek and the Architect Studio, plans for renovated Széll Kálmán tér included a tunnel beneath Várfok utca for pedestrians and cyclists but construction was eventually postponed.

Meanwhile, in 2016, the new owners of the neighbouring Posta Palota, Magyar Nemzeti Bank, began restoring the building, putting the unused gateway plans back on the drawing board.

This initiative will not only provide barrier-free traffic between Széll Kálmán tér and Csaba utca, but also an entrance to the Posta Palota, due to reopen as the Museum of Money and Banking History. A new public area will be renamed after the building’s designer, Gyula Sándy. Plans for the two sides of the tunnel remain unchanged, with a slope on one side and a staircase on the other side linking Várfok utca and Krisztina körút.
