From 1 July, English-language tours of Budapest’s prestigious Opera House are starting up again, with three scheduled at hourly intervals each afternoon. Performances, which had been taking place at the Erkel Theatre due to major renovations at the Opera House, are still subject to government restrictions on public gatherings over 500 people.

Budapest’s ornate Opera House is opening its doors once more – but only to those taking the 30-minute guided tour of the building. With renovations still ongoing, certain areas are still off-limits, but visitors can admire the lobby, the main staircase and certain halls and salons.

Built by Miklós Ybl, the Opera House was unveiled in the presence of Emperor Franz Josef in 1884 and remains one of the most elegant landmarks in the city.

Guided tours in English take place at 2pm, 3pm and 4pm every day and cost 2,500 forints to join. For booking and information, see here
