Budapest’s annual Pride Festival and March was originally slated for June, but has been rescheduled to August due to coronavirus safety measures.

When the coronavirus first appeared in Europe, Budapest joined Pride organisers from 70 countries discuss a strategy towards the pandemic. The Budapest Pride Festival will now run in August, with the march and party over the weekend of Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd.

Budapest’s Pride Festival is a huge affair – for the past two years, it’s lasted an entire month, with 20,000 attendees and 300 volunteers. This year, however, in an effort to keep organisers, volunteers and participants safe from the coronavirus, the programme has been shortened to ten days. Should the pandemic continue to remain a danger come August, the organisers intend to further delay the festivities, but they insist that the event will not be cancelled outright. “Even if it means marching in winter coats,” says a spokesperson. “A year without Budapest Pride is not an option!”
