Another iconic Budapest restaurant seems to be disappearing from the scene as the Kádár Étkezde in the heart of the Jewish Quarter has a For Sale sign up on the window.

Shared by members of a Facebook group for the residents of Erzsébetváros, District VII, a photograph shows one of Budapest’s oldest and most characterful restaurants due for closure.

Its owner, Sándor Orbán, is long past retirement age but had kept on going – until a few days ago. Regulars had long sensed his intention to call it a day, the most likely reason for the closure.

Across town, other venerable owners have also decided to bow out and leave their establishment to its fate – the Szép Ilona closed this spring, Wichmann in 2018. The Róma Ételbár also shut up shop but has not long reopened, offering a ray of hope that a similar outcome might befall the revered Kádár.
