The most famous name in Hungarian club football, Honvéd, are playing a match with spectators present this Sunday, 31 May. The game with Debrecen, taking place at MTK’s stadium while Honvéd’s is being rebuilt, is part of a whole weekend of league-football action, starting at Kaposvár tonight, Friday. Season-ticket holders will make up the bulk of the crowd in all cases.

Football’s back! After fixtures being played being closed doors last weekend, 23 May, games can take now place with spectators present, providing they follow the rules of social distancing.

Six games are programmed for the league round, five in the provinces and one in Budapest. Tonight sees Kaposvár host Zalaegerszeg in a relegation clash, while tomorrow, Saturday, matches take place in Kisvárda, Paks and Miskolc. Season-ticket holders may enter, stewards ensuring that spectators sit four seats apart.

As each stadium will be operating with a quarter of its capacity, each club will be selling any extra places on its website to non-season ticket holders. In Budapest, where the highest number of coronavirus cases have occurred, and whose post-shutdown reopening has occurred at a slower pace than in the provinces, the game between Honvéd and Debrecen will be played at MTK’s Hidegkuti Nándor Stadion before season-ticket holders only at 6.55pm on Sunday, 31 May. See here for the Facebook event page.

Temperatures will be checked at the gate and hand sanitisers will be provided. Staff will be wearing masks – it’s recommended that spectators do, too, at least when standing in queues.

It is also hoped that the 2020 Hungarian Cup Final between Honvéd and Mezőkövesd at the national Puskás Aréna, scheduled for Wednesday, 3 June, will also have spectators present, but that is yet to be confirmed. The Hungarian FA ticket outlet will have details of prices and availability.
