Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has just announced new restrictions to come into force from midnight tomorrow, Tuesday, 10 November. The measures, certain to be agreed by the National Assembly, include a curfew from 8pm-5am, home delivery for restaurants and a ban on events and social gatherings.

Strict measures are due to be in place across Hungary from midnight tomorrow, Tuesday, 10 November. Restaurants must close but can provide home delivery, while shops, hairdressers and service providers must close by 7pm.

Museums, theatres, gyms and leisure facilities will close. Sports matches are to be held behind closed doors, affecting Hungary’s vital Euro 2021 play-off with Iceland, due to take place at the Puskás Aréna on Thursday, 12 November.

Hotels may only accept guests for business purposes, not tourists. A maximum of ten people may attend a family gathering or a private event, and a maximum of 50 a wedding or funeral. Higher education will be conducted online and colleges must close.

Mr Orbán also announced that hotels cannot lay off workers and the State will reimburse them 80% of all bookings made by 8 November for the first 30 days of closure.

Restaurants and places of leisure do not have to pay contributions for their employees for these 30 days, and half of their wages will be reimbursed by the State. Workers must be paid and remain on staff.
