Intended to reduce traffic in the city centre, to develop neglected south Budapest and areas along the river, the design of the new Danube Bridge was put out to tender by the Budapest Development Centre (BFK) and National Infrastructure Development (NIF) in 2017. The winners, the Dutch UNStudio and UK’s Buro Happold consortium have since designed a world-class new bridge for Budapest.
Although the public has seen some visual designs before, the final ones, the evolution of the concept and the process of building it, as well as the completed bridge, its traffic and surroundings, can all now be seen in a spectacular video.
The bridge will comprise two new lanes of traffic in each direction. A wide cycle path and a new tram line will also be built, connected to the HÉV train line to Csepel and Ráckeve.
The first section of road, from Fehérvári út to the Gubacsi út-Illatos út junction, is currently the focus of public consultation. A Hungarian-language questionnaire consists of four major areas, aimed assessing local needs in south Pest, Csepel and south Buda. The autumn will then see further social dialogue concerning the second phase of the development, on the Pest side.
