July has arrived, which means that we should focus our energies once again on ditching plastic, and give Mother Nature a break. The aim is to get as many people involved as possible, who will hopefully keep their new habit going after July is over, too.

Plastic Free July is about drawing attention to the devastating global issue of plastic waste, and the consequences of not changing our ways. The Budapest venues joining the mission are dramatically reducing their single-use plastic consumption in the month of July, and switching to more environmentally friendly options instead. In return, they get support from the movement through various marketing tools and discounts.

One of the most alarming aspects of our overwhelming use of plastic for items is that while we only benefit from them for 12 minutes on average, their lifespan can be hundreds of years. The production of plastic materials, as well as their incorrect use, can not only damage wildlife and the environment, but can be dangerous for the human body as well.

There are endless reasons to stay away from single-use plastics, whether they be plastic bags, cups, straws or PET bottles. Collectively, we need to try to change our consumer habits, which may produce some level of initial discomfort, but can ultimately result in a healthier environment, and a better way of life for everyone on the planet.
